After winning a World Series championship in his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mookie Betts has announced the launch of his very own AAU basketball team.

Betts, who played basketball through high school, still enjoys the sport and wanted to give back to the community. “My love for basketball runs deep, and I want young men to have the opportunity to develop on and off the court,” he said in an Instagram post.

Evaluation day for Team Mookie will be held on Sunday, March 14, at Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tenn. Registration is open to 15- and 16-year-old students that are part of the class of 2023 and 2024.

The cost to tryout is $40 and players will be provided lunch and an evaluation t-shirt. Prior to on-court activities, students must sign in and get their temperature taken as part of the health and safety protocols.

Additionally, masks must be worn at all times unless actively participating on the court. Students will be introduced to the Team Mookie staff before dynamic warmups begin.

Among the activities scheduled include full court, skills and concepts, and 5-on-5 play. The tryout in its entirety is about two hours long.

Betts shared Kobe Bryant-narrated video after Dodgers won World Series

Shortly after the Dodgers won the 2020 World Series, Betts shared a celebratory video that was narrated by L.A. Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Betts and Bryant had a relationship through Body Armor that predated the trade between the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox. After Bryant’s tragic accident, Betts revealed the two had recently talked on the phone and had plans to meet in L.A.

Several players spoke about being inspired from Bryant’s relentless drive to win championships. The Dodgers honored Bryant and his daughter Gianna before a home game last August, and Betts shared his own message after that Sunday afternoon game.
