With all sports put on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a lot of the focus over the past month went to Michael Jordan and the 1990s Chicago Bulls with the release of ESPN’s “The Last Dance” docuseries.
Los Angeles Dodgers players were active on social media during the episodes, with Walker Buehler even giving Jordan credit for hitting .200 in Double-A when he decided to give baseball a try.
The main topic of discussion though has been who is the greatest basketball player of all-time between Jordan and LeBron James, and it was recently the topic of discussion on a Dodgers Zoom party.
Despite being part of a younger generation that has watched James’ entire career, Cody Bellinger had a simple answer to the debate: “Jordan.”
Clayton Kershaw is typically one of the deeper-thinkers on the roster, and that was again the case on the Zoom call when he posed an interesting question.
“But what’s the point? What’s the point in proving the unprovable? You can’t prove it, you just talk about it,” Kershaw said. “I think that’s what’s so funny about this. Everybody just talks like it’s the most important thing in the world, but you can’t prove it. It’s two different players at two different times. It’s impossible to prove. It’s not worth it.”
There certainly is some truth to what Kershaw is saying considering Jordan and James didn’t play in the same area so never faced each other on the court. Kershaw is especially privy to this type of discussion considering he has been compared to all-time great pitchers throughout the course of his career.
Justin Turner pegged Jordan as the best though and poked some at Kershaw for his response. “I used to believe you were better than Sandy Koufax, but I take it back,” Turner said.
Regardless of who is the greatest basketball player ever, “The Last Dance” was much-needed during this difficult time. Now that the 10-part series has come to an end, hopefully baseball and other sports can return as soon as possible.
Opening Day as early as the beginning of July has been the latest topic of discussion and could become a reality in the coming weeks.
