Tony Gonsolin and Kevin Gausman each failed to provide much length in Monday’s series opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, forcing both teams to use five relievers each in the contest.
The first man out of the bullpen for the Dodgers was Jimmie Sherfy, who hit a batter but otherwise tossed 1.1 scoreless innings.
Sherfy of course was claimed off waivers from the Giants last week and previously faced the Dodgers on June 28. He retired both batters in what turned out to be his final scoreless appearance for San Francisco.
According to Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group, Sherfy became the first pitcher in MLB history to appear in games for both the Dodgers and Giants in the same season:
According to Stats LLC
Jimmie Sherfy is the first pitcher to ever appear in games for the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers in the same season.
No pitcher had appeared in games for both franchises since 1943 when Bill Sayles pitched for New York and Brooklyn.

Sherfy, originally selected in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, appeared in 10 games for the Giants this season, going 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 10.2 innings pitched.
Sherfy got off to a strong start this season as he allowed no runs over his first six appearances. However, he gave up two runs in each of his final two games with the Giants, which led to the club designating him for assignment.
Sherfy has appeared in two games with the Dodgers and has yet to allow a run over 2.1 innings of work. He’s given up just one hit while collecting one strikeout during the span.
Muncy, Turner part of MLB history with back-to-back home runs
More MLB history was made in Monday’s matchup between the Dodgers and Giants as two of the seven sets of back-to-back home runs across the sport took place at Dodger Stadium.
The top of the first saw Buster Posey and Wilmer Flores hit back-to-back homers against Gonsolin. L.A. responded in the bottom of the frame when Max Muncy and Justin Turner returned the favor.
Along with the Dodgers and Giants players, the group consisted of the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil, and Kevin Pillar and Michael Conforto; Washington Nationals’ Juan Soto and Josh Bell; St. Louis Cardinals’ Dylan Carlson and Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Pavin Smith and Josh VanMeter.
