The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Freddie Freeman on the 10-day injured list last week because of a sprained right ankle that stemmed from an accidental slip in the shower.

Freeman’s IL stint was backdated to March 31 and announced by the team upon landing in Philadelphia on Thursday night. Hunter Feduccia was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City as the corresponding move.

After missing the entire series against the Atlanta Braves, Freeman is also due to be out for the Dodgers’ first domestic road trip of the regular season.

Manager Dave Roberts expects Freeman will be able to return when the Dodgers begin their homestand on Friday, via Jack Harris of the L.A. Times

Freeman played through a right ankle sprain during the playoffs last year that ultimately required offseason surgery. The 35-year-old likely could have played through his current issue as well, but the Dodgers are exercising caution given how early it is in the season.

Freeman is eligible to return on Thursday, April 10, which is an off day for the Dodgers. Thus, he conceivably could be back in the lineup the following night when the team hosts the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium.

Freddie Freeman staying positive

Even after aggravating his ankle by slipping in the shower, Freeman felt he caught a lucky break because testing came back

“I did an X-ray, and there’s no chips or anything like that,” Freeman said. “I literally stepped in with my right food, and it slid. I went down.

“It’s a glass door, so it could’ve been so much worse. I could’ve hit my head or something like that. I’m very thankful it was just a little mishap with my ankle.”
