Freddie Freeman was added to the National League roster for the 2022 MLB All-Star Game, replacing New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte. Freeman gives the Los Angeles Dodgers six All-Stars for the showcase at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night.
Mookie Betts and Trea Turner were voted in by fans as All-Star Game starters, and Tony Gonsolin and Clayton Kershaw were named to the NL team with the group of pitchers. Tyler Anderson was added as an injury replacement for the San Francisco Giants’ Carlos Rodón on Saturday.
The All-Star Game selection is Freeman’s sixth of his career. Included in that was previously starting the Midsummer Classic at first base in 2018, 2019 and 2021. That Freeman was an All-Star Game snub this season came as a surprise.
The decision looked to be an even larger omission as the 32-year-old is 16-for-24 with five doubles, three home runs and seven RBI over six games since the initial All-Star Game rosters were announced on Sunday, July 10.
Overall this season, he’s batting .321/.397/.530 with 31 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs, 59 RBI and a 159 wRC+ while having started in each of the Dodgers’ 90 games. Freeman leads the NL with 114 hits, and is second in batting average and doubles.
Freeman helps Dodgers tie All-Star Game record
With the addition of Freeman, the Dodgers have tied a Los Angeles franchise record with six All-Stars. They previously had that many in 1973, 1974, 1980, 1981, 1991 and 2017. The 1941, 1942, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers share the franchise record with seven All-Stars each.
Manager Dave Roberts said he hoped for — and anticipated — the Dodgers having seven All-Stars this season. Will Smith remains the lone omission from Roberts’ picks to represent the Dodgers this year.
Like Freeman, Smith finished the first half on a tear at the plate. However, he dismissed the notion of having extra motivation by being left off the NL roster.
