The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation took another hit on Wednesday as Clayton Kershaw was placed on the 10-day injured list with left forearm inflammation.
The injury came out of nowhere as the left-hander has not missed a single start this season. He was next scheduled to take the mound on Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks but now potentially is looking at a lengthy recovery.
“I don’t know how long it’s gonna be,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Wednesday’s loss to the Miami Marlins. “I think we’re trying to be smart about this understanding that we have the All-Star break.
“So just skip a start before the break, reassess where he’s at then make a decision. Obviously there’s a lot left in the season so kind of pushing through this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. He felt it in catch play a couple days ago so we just want to try to get ahead of it.”
Although forearm trouble could be indicative of a more serious injury, Roberts is not worried that will be the case with Kershaw. “Not a whole lot,” Roberts answered when asked how concerned he is.
“I think it’s just more of, to skip a start, to leverage the break, I’m not too concerned about it.”
To be on the safe side, the Dodgers plan to have Kershaw undergo an MRI when they return to L.A. this weekend. “He’s gonna get some tests when we get back home,” Roberts added.
Kershaw felt something off with elbow
The Dodgers will have a better idea of the severity of Kershaw’s injury in the coming days, but for now, Roberts suspects he is dealing with some kind of inflammation. “It’s just something in his elbow and it just didn’t feel right,” Roberts began.
“Some inflammation is kind of, when things don’t feel right with your body, it’s obviously a lot of it is inflammation. So we just felt it’s best to try to get ahead of it and take care of him.
“He’s a big part of what we’re doing so leveraging the All-Star break just makes a lot of sense.
