The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to have lived up to their name, dodging a potential serious injury for Freddie Freeman.
On Saturday, Freeman jammed his finger and sustained an injury while fielding a ground ball in the sixth inning at Busch Field. X-rays on Freeman’s finger were negative, but it got worse on Sunday and he needed to undergo a CT scan on it.
Freeman was held out of the Dodgers lineup for their series finale on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals and was considered day-to-day.
After the results of the CT scan, it revealed Freeman suffered a hairline fracture on his right middle finger. However, it will not keep Freeman out of the lineup as he will play through the injury.
“Freddie is doing fine,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “There’s a hairline fracture in his middle finger, the right middle finger. It’s sort of to his tolerance. He’s got a high tolerance, so he’s going to play. It shouldn’t affect him at bat, throwing, and it just speaks to how tough he is.”
Freeman had significant swelling on Sunday, which prevented him from playing and created the additional concern, but his finger was much improved on Monday, which allowed him to play.
“That was the biggest thing. He couldn’t really brush his teeth, his hair,” Roberts said. “So the swelling was there, but it all dissipated, so he feels like he should give it a go and I’m excited to pencil him in there.”
Being able to avoid losing Freeman to the injured list is a a massive positive update for the Dodgers. With Tommy Edman and Max Muncy both returning on Monday, the lineup is finally at full strength with Chris Taylor and Austin Barnes the only position players on the IL.
