The list of injuries the Los Angeles Dodgers have dealt with this season grew Saturday night to include Dustin May, who recorded just five outs in his start against the Milwaukee Brewers.
May immediately gestured toward the dugout after throwing a 94 mph fastball that was well off target and 4 mph slower than his average. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer had a brief conversation with the 23-year-old before he exited the game.
The Dodgers announced May had suffered a “right arm injury,” and Roberts had still had sparse details following the loss in extra innings. “He just felt kind of a shooting sensation through his arm on one of those curveballs he threw in the McKinney at-bat,” Roberts said.
“As far as updates, we’re going to get an MRI when we get to Chicago. Remain hopeful, but won’t know until we get that MRI. … I think anytime a pitcher comes out of a game and you start talking about the elbow, I’m concerned. I don’t want to kind of get ahead of it until we know more, though.”
The Dodgers face the Brewers in an 11 a.m. PT start time for the four-game series finale at American Family Field. They then will bus to Chicago ahead of a three-game set that begins Monday.
If May is to miss an extended period of time, which appears inevitable at this point, the Dodgers could manage without a replacement in the immediate future. Starting with May on Saturday, each member of the rotation is receiving an extra day of rest.
L.A. then has three off days between Sunday and May 13, which would allow for them to get by with four starters. For now, the focus is with May’s health.
“We’ll know more with the MRI but certainly the health of a player in the short and long term is our biggest concern,” Roberts said.
Dodgers likely roster move
While the team won’t know more on May’s status until after arriving in Chicago, they are placing him on the 10-day injured list. Edwin Uceta, who made his MLB debut and threw 27 pitches over two innings on Friday, presumably will get recalled.
Gerardo Carrillo and Andre Jackson are other conceivable options, though travel logistics likely rule them out. Top prospect Josiah Gray would need to be added to the Dodgers’ 40-man roster in order to be called up.
