Dodgers Free Agency Rumors: Tyler Cyr Signed

Originally published by DodgerBlue.com

An overwhelming majority of Los Angeles Dodgers free agents have left the team this offseason, with Clayton Kershaw the lone member of the group to re-sign.

Some of that has seemingly stemmed from the Dodgers apparent desire to remain below the $233 million luxury tax threshold for the 2023 season. However, the likelihood of accomplishing as much and resetting penalties was effectively washed away when an independent arbitrator reduced Trevor Bauer’s suspension to 194 games and reinstated him.

All the while the Dodgers have either signed free agents to one-year contracts or Minor League deals.

According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, the latest in that group was Tyler Cyr, who signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers and will be a non-roster invitee to 2023 Spring Training:

Cyr was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. The right-hander was granted free agency in November 2021 and he went on to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cyr made his MLB debut last year with the Phillies, but only appeared in one game before getting designated for assignment the following day as a corresponding move to Philadelphia selecting the contract of Michael Plassmeyer.

The Oakland Athletics proceeded to claim Cyr off waivers and provided him with more of an opportunity. The 29-year-old went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA, 3.04 FIP and 1.08 WHIP in 11 games for the A’s. Included in his time with Oakland was Cyr producing a 30.8% strikeout rate.

Pitching at the Triple-A level for the Phillies and Athletics last year, Cyr went a combined 2-3 with six saves, a 2.85 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 39 games.

Following the season, Cyr continued pitching for the Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League.

Will Tyler Cyr make Dodgers bullpen?

In being signed to a Minor League contract, Cyr figures to primarily be organizational depth. However, a strong showing in Spring Training and potentially with Oklahoma City, could lead to spending time up in the Dodgers bullpen at some point during the 2023 season.
