Max Muncy delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to score Shohei Ohtani and lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. The win halted a four-game losing streak for Los Angeles and evened the series at one game apiece.
Entering the contest, the Dodgers were slight favorites with most sportsbooks setting the moneyline around -135. The Diamondbacks, following their 9-5 win the night before, were underdogs at approximately +115. The total runs projection was set at 8.5, and the game met expectations with seven total runs scored in the extra frames.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto was the story through seven innings for Los Angeles. The Japanese right-hander delivered one of the most dominant outings of his young MLB career, holding Arizona hitless through six innings before Ketel Marte led off the seventh with a single. Yamamoto exited after a career-high 110 pitches, allowing one hit, no runs, and striking out nine.
The Dodgers carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning, thanks to a pair of doubles in the fourth by Freddie Freeman and Will Smith. However, closer Tanner Scott was unable to preserve the lead. Gabriel Moreno tied the game with a solo home run in the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Scott remained on the mound and allowed a two-run home run to Corbin Carroll. Tim Tawa, who started the inning as the automatic runner on second, scored on the 404-foot shot to center field. Scott was charged with all three of Arizona’s runs.
The Dodgers responded quickly in the bottom of the 10th. Kiké Hernández, the designated runner at second, scored on Tommy Edman’s double to left off Diamondbacks reliever Shelby Miller. Following an intentional walk to Ohtani and Freeman, Miller hit Smith with a pitch, forcing in the tying run.
With one out and the bases loaded, Muncy lifted a fly ball to center field deep enough to score Ohtani, securing the Dodgers’ first win in five games. The team had previously dropped four straight, including a series sweep against the Angels and Monday’s loss to Arizona.
Anthony Banda earned the win in relief for Los Angeles, improving to 4-0. He needed just six pitches to record the final out in the top of the 10th before the Dodgers rallied in the bottom half.
The loss dropped Miller to 3-1 on the season. He had been a reliable piece of Arizona’s bullpen until Tuesday’s outing, when he struggled with command during the decisive inning.
The series concludes Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. Arizona will send right-hander Corbin Burnes to the mound. Burnes enters with a 3-1 record and a 2.56 earned run average. The Dodgers will counter with right-hander Dustin May, who returns to the rotation on four days’ rest with a 1-4 record and a 4.43 ERA.
