Tommy Edman singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning. Justin Wrobleski closed out the game as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Wednesday night at Chase Field. The result brought Los Angeles within one game of clinching another National League West title while dealing a setback to Arizona’s postseason push.

Oddsmakers listed the Dodgers as -135 favorites on the moneyline, with the Diamondbacks set at +115. The total was 8.5 runs, and the game pushed just over as the teams combined for nine.

The deciding blow came when Edman lined a two-out single off reliever Brandyn Garcia in the top of the 11th to score Freddie Freeman, who had started the inning as the automatic runner at second. Wrobleski then delivered a clean bottom half, retiring three straight hitters to secure his third career save and second of the season.

Los Angeles reduced its magic number to one for capturing the NL West, meaning any Dodgers win or any San Diego Padres loss will lock up the franchise’s 12th division title in the past 13 seasons. The Dodgers, already assured of a postseason berth, have won four of their last five.

For Arizona, the loss carried heavy consequences. The Diamondbacks entered the night tied with the Cincinnati Reds, one game behind the New York Mets for the final National League wild-card spot. Both the Mets and Reds lost earlier on Wednesday, but Arizona could not capitalize, leaving the club with six games to climb back into contention.

The game featured multiple momentum shifts. Los Angeles built a 4-1 lead on Andy Pages’ two-run home run in the fourth inning and timely hitting from Freeman and others. Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson lasted only four innings, yielding three runs before handing the ball to the bullpen.

Dodgers starter Blake Snell continued his strong recent form, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out five. The reigning Cy Young Award winner has now posted three consecutive quality starts, giving Los Angeles added stability in its rotation as October approaches.

Arizona staged a late rally in the eighth inning against reliever Edgardo Henriquez. Corbin Carroll doubled home a run, Gabriel Moreno followed with an infield single to cut the deficit to one, and Adrian Del Castillo lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game 4-4. Carroll also reached a personal milestone with the performance, becoming the first player in franchise history to record at least 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season.

Los Angeles turned to its bullpen for extended work, and after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the 10th when Jack Dreyer and Blake Treinen induced back-to-back outs, the Dodgers pushed ahead in the 11th on Edman’s clutch hit.

The series concludes Thursday night, with Arizona scheduled to start right-hander Zac Gallen (13-14, 4.70 ERA) against Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (11-8, 2.58 ERA).
