When the Los Angeles Dodgers announced their initial 51-player pool last month, they left some room for potential additions prior to the 2020 regular season beginning July 23.
The club has since added Devin Mann to the group, taking advantage of that flexibility. The 23-year-old is coming off a breakout year for High-A Rancho Cucamonga in which he hit a career-high 19 home runs across 98 games.
The player pool again expanded this week with the additions of AJ Ramos and Clayton Beeter. They essentially replaced David Price, who opted out of playing this season, and Jimmy Nelson — lost for the year due to a back injury that requires surgery.
Now exactly two weeks away from Opening Day, the Dodgers have added another pair to their player pool in the form of Jake Vogel and Brett de Geus.
Vogel, 18, was the Dodgers third-round selection in the 2020 MLB Draft. One of the fastest players of his class, he adds an intriguing element to the player pool.
“We were happy to be able to select Jake,” Dodgers director of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino said last month. “He’s a dynamic athlete. He’s only 5’11” and like 190 lbs., but it’s a 70 runner with a big arm, plus-center field defense, he’s got power.
“He’s just a physically gifted kid that missed some of last summer with a back injury. He came out last fall and early spring, performed really well and kind of shot up our board.”
As for de Geus, he is coming off an excellent 2019 season in which he split time with Low-A Great Lakes and High-A Rancho Cucamonga.
de Geus threw 30.2 innings for Low-A Great Lakes, pitching to a 2.35 ERA, 1.88 FIP, 10.57 strikeouts per nine innings and 1.76 walks per nine. He was selected to the Midwest League All-Star team prior to being promoted to High-A Rancho Cucamonga.
The 22-year-old didn’t miss a beat after being called up, logging 31 innings for the Quakes with a 1.16 ERA, 2.21 FIP, 10.45 K/9, and 2.03 BB/9.
