The Los Angeles Dodgers won their ninth World Series title in franchise history and became MLB’s first repeat champion since the New York Yankees rattled off three in a row from 1998-2000.

It marked just a third time in Dodgers franchise history they won a Game 7 of the World Series. The first such instance occurred in the 1955 World Series, which was the lone title Brooklyn won. The Dodgers then repeated that accomplishment against the Minnesota Twins in 1965.

In some sense, the end result with the 2025 baseball season was to be expected. Particularly with a strong showing from the Dodgers starting rotation. Though, the group did regress some against a talented Toronto Blue Jays lineup.

But the fact of the matter is the team arrived at Rogers Centre late last week just one loss away from their season coming to a crashing halt.

The Dodgers staved off elimination in part by completing double plays to finish off wins in Games 6 and 7, and they also erased a deficit in the ninth inning on Saturday before going on for a victory in extras. Both achievements represented firsts in MLB postseason history.

Kiké Hernández started a game-ending double play in Game 6 by charging a soft-hit fly ball despite losing it in the lights. Hernández explained after the Dodgers’ win that he was aided by Blue Jays fans going silent.

In Game 7, Mookie Betts fielded a chopper to start a 6-3 double play that wrapped up the Dodgers’ comeback win.

Dodgers alter LCS-World Series history

Also working against the Dodgers was the track record of teams that swept their way into the World Series when facing an opponent that endured seven games in a League Championship Series.

Prior to this year, all four teams that played seven games in an LCS to then face a club that swept to reach the Fall Classic, were undefeated.
