The Los Angeles Dodgers repeated as World Series champions last year despite their offense never reaching its full potential.
Aside from a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2025 National League Wild Card Series, when they scored 18 runs in two games, the Dodgers batted just .213 over the final three rounds of the postseason. They hit just .203 against the Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series but were able to hold them off largely due to the contributions of their pitching staff.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts wants the team to flip the script this season and have its offense carry more of the load in October, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group.
“I don’t like that,” Roberts said. “And I think if you look at the performance, that’s the way people see it and understandably so. But for me, I want our offense to drive this postseason.
“Certainly hitting is harder in the postseason. We all understand that. … Winning is great, but you don’t ever want to feel we won in spite of X or Y and in this particular case it’s our offense.”
If the Dodgers’ bats are going to make an impact during the postseason, they will need to find a way to break out of their prolonged cold spell. Since July 1, the team has scored an MLB-worst 209 runs in 51 games.
L.A.’s offense especially struggled in August, averaging just 3.85 runs per game with a team on-base plus slugging of .689.
Nearly every Dodgers player has been mired in an extended slump over the last two months. One of the few exceptions is Freddie Freeman, who continues to hit at a high clip despite his overall power numbers declining.
While the situation may look bleak now, the Dodgers have been in this spot before. They were one of the worst offensive teams last July before eventually bouncing back and ending the regular season on a strong note.
Dave Roberts moving on from disappointing August
The Dodgers went just 2-4 during their most recent road trip, getting swept by the Atlanta Braves before winning a series against the Detroit Tigers. Despite returning to L.A. on a positive note, Roberts was looking forward to the final month of the regular season.
“Is it September yet?” Roberts said on SportsNet LA. “Yeah, August was very forgettable.”
The Dodgers went 13-14 during the month of August.
