Dave Roberts, Max Muncy Unable To Explain Struggles Of Dodgers Lineup

The Los Angeles Dodgers lineup is filled with a bevy of All-Stars but recent production has fallen well short of expectations.

L.A. took an early lead against Adam Wainwright, but the longtime St. Louis Cardinals ace went through a stretch of retiring 22 of 23 batters faced. The Dodgers chased Wainwright from the game in the ninth inning and scored two runs, but their comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss.

“We’ve got a lot of guys that have been here for a lot of years. We’ve been able to come back a lot of times in the past,” Max Muncy said. “It’s still in there. There’s a lot of fight in this team. We know who we are and we’re not going to give up on any lead.”

Muncy hit a home run off Wainwright but has been among the several Dodgers mired in a slump for multiple weeks. “It’s definitely been inconsistent,” he said of the team’s offense.

“Pitchers come out and they gave us their best, and we really haven’t been giving our best back at them. It’s just one of those things where we have the talent and we’re just not putting it together. We haven’t really been able to do it all year.

“I think if you ask anyone on this team they’ll tell you we’ve really sucked on the offensive side.”

Roberts: Dodgers offense needs to improve

Manager Dave Roberts recently highlighted Corey Seager and Will Smith as consistently putting together quality at-bats that were needed from the team as a whole. Like Muncy, Roberts also was unable to pinpoint what has held the Dodgers back offensively.

“I wish I had an answer. I know the preparation and urgency every night from the beginning of the season hasn’t changed,” he said.

“I just don’t have an answer, but clearly the last 30 days we haven’t been ourselves. The pitching and defense has really allowed us to win a lot of ballgames. There’s going to come a time where the offense has to pick up some slack too.”
