Christian Moore delivered the game-tying and game-winning home runs as the Los Angeles Angels rallied to defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium. The victory allowed the Angels to sweep the series, while Boston dropped its fourth consecutive game.
Moore, regarded as the Angels’ top prospect and the eighth overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft, provided a breakout performance in his 11th major league game. In the eighth inning, he tied the score at 1-1 with a solo home run off Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert. Then, after Boston took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th on an RBI single from Marcelo Mayer, Moore completed the comeback with a two-run walk-off homer to right field off Justin Wilson. It was Moore’s third home run in the major leagues and the defining moment of his young career.
Boston’s offense was limited throughout the game, with Mayer accounting for three of the team’s five total hits. He tripled in the third inning and scored the Red Sox’s first run on a sacrifice fly from Nate Eaton. Mayer later added the RBI single in the 10th, briefly putting Boston back in front.
Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet delivered an impressive performance, striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings while allowing only three hits and walking three. Crochet, who leads the majors in strikeouts, recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the season and posted his first scoreless outing since April 19.
The Angels could not generate much against Crochet, but their bullpen held the Red Sox in check after starter Tyler Anderson exited in the fifth inning. Anderson gave up two hits over 4 2/3 innings and kept Los Angeles within striking distance. Reid Detmers was credited with the win, improving to 3-2, despite allowing the go-ahead run in the 10th.
Zach Neto exited the game for the Angels in the ninth inning after suffering an apparent injury while fielding a ground ball. Neto’s error allowed Romy Gonzalez to reach base, but Boston failed to capitalize as Kenley Jansen worked out of the inning unscathed.
With the victory, the Angels improved their position as they aim to climb back into the playoff conversation, while the Red Sox reached the midpoint of their season at 40-41. This marks only the fourth time in the past 27 full seasons that Boston has held a losing record through 81 games.
The series concludes Wednesday afternoon with Los Angeles seeking a sweep. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-6, 3.01 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Angels. Boston is expected to send right-hander Richard Fitts (0-3, 4.71 ERA) to the mound. According to betting markets, the Angels open as slight -115 favorites with the Red Sox listed at -105. The over/under for the game is set at 8.5 runs.
