The Los Angeles avoided being swept by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday with a 10-8 win despite Bobby Miller struggling through another start.

The right-hander allowed six runs on five hits and walked six batters against two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. He also gave up a pair of home runs, including a three-run blast to Cody Bellinger that chased Miller from the game.

“I think he’s grinding. I see it. He’s competing as much as he can,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Miller’s performance. “I think today, it was easy to see he didn’t have a feel for the curveball. He didn’t strike it very often.

“They were taking good swings off the fastball. The changeup at times was good. Certainly, the walks weren’t helpful.”

Outside of a dominant start against the St. Louis Cardinals in his 2024 debut, Miller’s sophomore season has been filled with struggles. He was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in July and only returned to the team the following month because of a rash of injuries affecting the starting rotation.

To make matters worse, Miller is pitching through a left knee injury himself. However, he is expected to take at least one more turn in the Dodgers rotation before the team re-evaluates.

“He’s going to get another start, and then we’ll see from there,” Roberts answered when asked if Miller is staying in the rotation.

After a promising rookie season, Miller is just 2-4 with an 8.17 ERA, 7.14 FIP and 1.69 WHIP in 54 innings over 12 starts this year.

Who could replace Bobby Miller in the Dodgers rotation?

If Miller struggles in his next start, the Dodgers could look to call up Ben Casparius or Justin Wrobleski to take his spot in the rotation. Both pitchers are on the 40-man roster and eligible to be recalled in the next week.

The more likely scenario, however, is Tyler Glasnow returning from the 15-day injured list.
