The Los Angeles Dodgers have welcomed a handful of players back from the injured list over recent weeks and could activate Edgardo Henriquez for the National League Division Series, but Blake Treinen is expected to miss the playoffs because of a right shoulder injury.
Treinen was warming up on Saturday, only for Brock Stewart to enter in the seventh inning instead. Treinen then was seen walking off the field with a Dodgers trainer.
“It’s unfortunate. He was warming up, and it was shoulder,” manager Dave Roberts said on SportsNet LA after the 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. “I don’t know if it was a complete blow out, but really unfortunate.
“We’re going to get imaging — I don’t know if it’s today, tomorrow — but obviously it’s an IL. His season is over. Unfortunate for him.”
Roberts added Treinen had not experienced any other trouble before Saturday but noted his prior stint on the injured list last year and said the right shoulder issue “unfortunately showed its head again.”
Blake Treinen’s injuries
The full extent of Treinen’s right shoulder injury is not yet known, nor is it clear if he will undergo surgery. Regardless, it does mark the end of a two-year, $22 million contract Treinen signed to remain with the Dodgers heading into the 2025 season.
Last year he missed three months because of right forearm rightness. Elbow inflammation then sidelined Treinen for just over two months this season before he was activated Sept. 2. He was encouraged after going through a lengthy recovery period and looked to provide value for the Dodgers in playoffs.
In 2024, Treinen dealt with left hip discomfort and he didn’t pitch at all in 2023 because of right shoulder surgery to repair the rotator cuff and labrum. Treinen missed the first month of the 2024 season but of course is remembered for his valiant performance in Game 5 of the World Series that year.
Treinen’s 2026 season comes to an end after throwing just 29.2 innings over 35 appearances. He went 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. Treinen’s inconsistencies this year resulted in being moved into low leverage situations.
Even without the veteran available, the Dodgers still have Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart, Roki Sasaki, Edwin Díaz and potentially Henriquez as their right-handed options out of the bullpen come the playoffs.
