Jo Adell delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning as the Los Angeles Angels overcame Shohei Ohtani’s go-ahead home run to earn a 7–6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium. The Dodgers entered the game as -160 betting favorites but dropped their third straight, falling into a tie for first place in the NL West with the San Diego Padres.
Ohtani, facing his former team, homered for the fourth consecutive game in the top of the ninth inning, sending a Kenley Jansen cutter over the wall in right field for his National League-leading 43rd home run of the season. The 114.8-mph drive briefly put the Dodgers ahead 6–5, extending Ohtani’s hitting streak to 11 games. He has now hit five home runs in his last six contests.
Earlier, Ohtani was involved in a rare defensive highlight when the Angels turned the eighth triple play in franchise history in the sixth inning. With two on and no outs, shortstop Zach Neto caught Ohtani’s line drive up the middle, stepped on second base to retire Miguel Rojas, and threw to first baseman Nolan Schanuel to get Dalton Rushing.
The Angels, however, responded in the bottom of the ninth. Luis Rengifo led off with a single and advanced on a groundout before scoring on Schanuel’s sacrifice fly to tie the game. The Angels loaded the bases later in the inning, but Ben Casparius struck out Taylor Ward to send the game to extras.
Connor Brogdon pitched a scoreless top of the 10th for the Angels, setting up the game-winning sequence. Christian Moore laid down a bunt single to move Ward, the automatic runner, to third base. Adell then hit a high chopper over the drawn-in infield, bringing Ward home with the winning run.
Ward had a strong night at the plate, hitting his 28th home run and driving in two runs. Rengifo and Schanuel also contributed key RBIs, and the Angels improved to 5–0 against the Dodgers this season.
For the Dodgers, Rushing hit his second major league home run, a solo shot earlier in the game, while Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman each added hits. Despite the late lead from Ohtani’s homer, the Dodgers’ bullpen could not secure the win. Jansen, who entered with a streak of 21 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run — the longest of his career — saw that streak end.
With the loss, the Dodgers are now tied with San Diego for first place in the division for the first time since June 13. The Padres have won four straight, including a victory over San Francisco earlier Tuesday.
The series continues Wednesday night, with Ohtani (0–0, 2.37 ERA) set to start for the Dodgers against Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (6–8, 4.63 ERA) in his first pitching appearance against his former club.
