A tightly contested pitching duel at Yankee Stadium ended in extra innings Monday night as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the New York Yankees 1-0. Nolan Schanuel’s opposite-field double in the 11th inning drove in the game’s only run, snapping a scoreless tie and handing the American League East-leading Yankees their fourth consecutive loss, their longest skid of the season.

The decisive moment came against Yankees reliever Jonathan Loáisiga, who took the loss, 0-1. With one out and a runner on second base under extra-innings rules, Schanuel connected on a pitch that sent the ball into left field, scoring Christian Moore. Moore, a Brooklyn native, had tripled earlier in the game for his first career major league hit in his initial appearance at Yankee Stadium.

The Angels’ bullpen maintained the slim lead with a combined effort. Ryan Zeferjahn earned the win to improve to 4-1 after tossing a scoreless 10th inning. Brock Burke got two outs in the 11th but allowed the bases to load. Hunter Strickland then induced a fielder’s choice groundout from Anthony Volpe to seal the game, earning his first save of the season.

The Yankees continued to struggle offensively, particularly in critical situations. The team went 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position and has not scored in its last 20 innings. Over their past five games, New York has managed only five runs in total, and Monday’s defeat marked their first four-game losing streak since July 2–5 of last season.

Despite the loss, there were some positives for the Yankees. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton returned after missing 70 games due to inflammation in both elbows. He went 2-for-4, including a double in the ninth inning. However, that opportunity was squandered when Anthony Volpe grounded into a forceout after a sharp defensive play by third baseman Luis Rengifo.

Starting pitchers on both sides delivered strong performances. Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt allowed only four hits over 7 2/3 innings, including a stretch where he retired 16 consecutive batters. Angels starter José Soriano matched the effort with seven innings of six-hit ball.

Christian Moore, selected eighth overall in the 2024 amateur draft, finished 1-for-4 and made a notable defensive play in the 11th, throwing out a runner at home plate from second base. The 22-year-old second baseman had previously been held hitless in his first eight major league at-bats before breaking through against New York.

The Angels remain perfect in extra-inning games this season, improving to 5-0, while the Yankees fell to 1-5 in similar contests. Los Angeles remains the only team in the league to have used just five starting pitchers throughout the year.

The series continues Tuesday night with right-hander Will Warren (4-3, 4.86 ERA) taking the mound for New York against Los Angeles right-hander Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 5.20 ERA). According to current betting odds, the Yankees opened as -140 favorites, while the Angels entered as +120 underdogs. The over/under for the game is set at 8.5 runs.
