Logan O’Hoppe drove in five runs and hit one of three home runs for the Los Angeles Angels as they outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-9 on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium. The victory gave the Angels their first series win at the ballpark since 2012 and spoiled Clayton Kershaw’s return to the mound in his 2025 season debut.
The Dodgers entered the matchup as clear betting favorites, with most oddsmakers placing them at approximately -180 on the moneyline. The Angels were underdogs at around +155, but their offense capitalized on several key opportunities to overcome a late deficit and claim the win.
Kershaw, a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner, made his first start since recovering from multiple offseason surgeries. After pitching just seven games in 2024 due to injuries to his shoulder, toe, and knee, he returned to the rotation but struggled in the opening inning. The left-hander threw 38 pitches and allowed three runs in the first, ultimately lasting four innings. He gave up five runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out two.
The Dodgers rallied early, tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run by rookie Andy Pages. The teams traded runs over the next several innings before the Dodgers pulled ahead 7-5 in the sixth. Dalton Rushing contributed an RBI double, and Michael Conforto later scored on a wild pitch to give Los Angeles the lead.
However, the Angels answered with a five-run rally in the seventh inning. Nolan Schanuel doubled in a run before O’Hoppe delivered the pivotal blow — a three-run home run to right field off Dodgers reliever Kirby Yates, who took the loss and fell to 3-2. Kevin Newman added an RBI single in the same frame, giving the Angels a 10-7 advantage.
The Dodgers trimmed the lead to 10-9 in the eighth, but Matthew Lugo added a solo home run for the Angels in the ninth, extending the lead and sealing the final margin. O’Hoppe finished the night with two hits, including his 10th home run of the season, and recorded his fifth go-ahead hit of the year.
Kiké Hernández also homered for the Dodgers, and Freddie Freeman matched a season high with four hits. Despite their offensive output, the Dodgers were unable to overcome late-inning mistakes on the mound.
Reid Detmers earned the win in relief for the Angels, improving to 1-2 after pitching two innings and allowing one run. Kenley Jansen, pitching against his former team, recorded the final four outs to earn his eighth save of the season.
The Angels’ victory marked their first series win at Dodger Stadium since June 2012. The interleague rivals will conclude the three-game set on Sunday. Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season after returning from Tommy John surgery, carrying a 2-0 record and 2.81 ERA. The Angels will counter with left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, who is looking for his first win in his 10th start of the season and enters with a 3.72 ERA.
