The Los Angeles Dodgers put Andy Pages on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left hand and recalled Alek Thomas from Triple-A Oklahoma City before Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pages suffered his injury when he was hit by a 100.2 mph fastball from Bubba Chandler during the third inning of the series opener. Pages initially remained in the game but was replaced in center field by Kiké Hernández.
Manager Dave Roberts revealed after the Dodgers’ walk-off win that X-rays revealed Pages sustained a fracture in the back of his left hand. The Dodgers anticipate the All-Star missing four to five weeks, regardless of whether or not Pages ultimately needs surgery.
What to know about Alek Thomas
The Dodgers acquired Thomas in May in a trade that sent Jose Requena to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Alek Thomas. Michael Siani was designated for assignment in order to make room for Thomas on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
Thomas getting traded came four days after he had been DFA’d by the Diamondbacks in their corresponding move to calling up top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt. The Dodgers assumed roughly $1.4 million in salary that was still owed to Thomas at the time of the trade. He is under team control via arbitration through the 2028 season.
Thomas hit just .181/.222/.340 with nine doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI over 28 games with Arizona this season. Thomas made his MLB debut in 2022 and had been up with the Diamondbacks for at leasts parts of five seasons.
Thomas was a member of the Diamondbacks team that swept the Dodgers in the 2023 National League Division Series. He started in all three games and hit safely in two of them, which included going 2-for-4 in Game 3.
The Dodgers first had Thomas report to their Camelback Ranch facility in order to work with the organization’s hitting coaches. He appeared in three games with the Arizona Complex League Dodgers before debuting with Oklahoma City on June 3.
The 26-year-old has hit .296/.362/.493 with 17 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 40 RBI over 55 games with the Comets.
Thomas received the nod to join the Dodgers over heralded prospects Josue De Paula, Mike Sirota, James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard. That presumably was due to already being on the 40-man roster and also being more of a natural center fielder, which Roberts indicated the Dodgers would prioritize.
