Coaches with a year left and notes from around the league

Nick Alberga: After how things went down in Edmonton, have been told that Kris Knoblauch isn’t going to rush into his next job and don’t expect him to be a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching search.

OverDrive: Vegas Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon on TSN 1050 OverDrive said that “it’s only news because Edmonton leaked it,” with regards to them not giving the Edmonton Oilers permission to speak with fired head coach Bruce Cassidy.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: John Tortorella is the only coach on an expiring contract and can see the sides wanting to get a deal done.

There are 10 coaches who will be entering the final year of their deals: Joel Quenneville (Ducks), Jared Bednar (Avs), Rick Bowness (Blue Jackets), John Hynes (Wild), Martin St. Louis (Canadiens), Andrew Brunette (Predators), Ryan Warsofsky (Sharks), Spencer Carbery (Capitals), and Scott Arniel (Jets).

An extension for Hynes, St. Louis and Carbery likely won’t take long. Quenneville will be turning 68, so he may not rush a deal.

Bruce Cassidy Would Like to Talk to the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings

What will happen with Bednar after the Avs sweep? No team has asked to speak with Patrick Roy, who has two years left at $4 million on his deal. Craig Berube interviewed with the Edmonton Oilers recently has two years left at $4.5 million. The LA Kings are one of the teams that have spoken with Peter Laviolette. No one has been given permission to speak with Bruce Cassidy.

Frank Seravalli: Sources on the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching search.

  • “#FlyTogether Jay Woodcroft scheduled to interview this week. Interviewed with #LAKings last week. Handicapped as “one of the front runners” for the Toronto job. Either spot, solid bet to be an NHL HC again next season.
  • Wide swath of as many as 20 interviewees with varying experience.
  • Most interviews this stage are via Zoom.
  • Leafs brass expected to regroup and focus on Draft Combine next week in Buffalo.
  • Process expected to continue the following week with in-person interviews for a small handful of finalists.”
