The Las Vegas Raiders head into an offseason with new faces leading the organization as they recently announced the hirings of Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler as their new head coach and general manager, respectively.
After a 2021 season filled with drama and unexpected situations, the Raiders looked to revamp their franchise with a pair of individuals from the New England Patriots who are known for their stability and culture of winning. However, with McDaniels and Zeigler at the helm, Las Vegas could look completely different ahead of the 2022 season.
One big question looming over the new regime is the future of Derek Carr, who is in the last year of the five-year deal he signed back in 2017. While Carr has expressed a desire to retire with the Silver and Black, Zeigler was non-committal about handing the quarterback an extension before the new season starts via Vincent Bonsignore of Las Vegas Review-Journal:
“The one thing that we all understand is, there’s going to be a process of us learning Derek, of Derek learning us and fitting all those pieces together,” Ziegler said. “I think that’s going to be step one, building a relationship, understanding what Derek does well. Derek understanding what Josh and the offensive staff is trying to build.
“I think as that collaboration goes, then you have to see how everything fits together. … And kind of work from that point.”
Any time a new general manager and head coach are brought aboard, there is a sense they may look to build fresh and bring in players that fit their vision. Although Carr has played well during his time with the Raiders, Zeigler and McDaniels will surely take their time evaluating the signal-caller before making any long-term decisions.
From Carr’s perspective, he is also taking a wait-and-see approach before committing to the franchise. It will be an interesting story to monitor in the coming months.
