The story of Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams known as the “Greatest Show on Turf” is one of the best in NFL history, and it is now headed to the big screen.
Warner originally went undrafted and played in the Arena League before joining the Rams and going on to win a Super Bowl, two NFL MVPs and a Super Bowl MVP in addition to being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
All of that will be documented in an upcoming biopic on his life titled “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story.”
The film was written by David Aaron Cohen, Jon Gunn and Jon Erwin and will be produced by Mark Ciardi and Kevin Downes. It is based on interviews with Warner as well as his memoir “All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football, and the First Miracle Season.”
While production won’t begin until later this year, according to Dave McNary of Variety, it has been revealed that Zachary Levi will be playing Warner in the film. He spoke about how excited he is for the role:
“Kurt’s story is one of relentless faith — in his own abilities but even more so in a higher power,” said Levi. “When I read Kurt’s story, I identified with the quiet strength he found to persevere – that’s something I think anybody can recognize in their own lives. This is the kind of underdog story that sports movies are all about, and the fact that it’s true makes it even more special. I’m thrilled to be part of bringing his story to audiences.”
Levi is most known for his role in the TV series “Chuck” and also recently starred in the movie “Shazam!”
It is unknown which of Warner’s teammates from the Rams will be depicted in the movie, although there likely will be a large portion devoted to the Greatest Show on Turf.
