Collin Sexton was a surprise signing for the Los Angeles Lakers, as there was no prior reported interest from the team. However, it appeared that general manager Rob Pelinka wanted to invest in bench scoring and frankly is not a bad decision after the second unit struggled greatly the last two seasons.
Being a Laker serves as a monumental moment in a player’s career given how historic a franchise Los Angeles is and Sexton spoke highly of his experience so far.
“It’s been amazing,” Sexton said in a recent interview with ESPN LA. “Everyone’s just pretty much open and welcoming, and it’s been good to talk to the coaches, talk to the players. It’s a whole bunch of new faces, so we’re all learning each and every day together.”
When evaluating his options in free agency, the 27-year-old revealed what was intriguing to him about joining the Lakers.
“I would say just opportunity to win, being on the big stage and being in the situation where I can try to come in and impact winning,” he continued. “I feel like I’ve been on different teams where it’s just been a lot tougher. Of course, the want to win, it’s always been there. But it’s definitely tough to win in the NBA. It’s a hard thing and each and every night we’re playing against the best of the best. So I think just being on this stage and being able to impact winning each and every day, and what I bring to the team and bring to the game. I feel like I just fit right in.”
The Lakers are entering a new era with Luka Doncic as the unquestioned face of the franchise after LeBron James’ departure in free agency. Despite that though, expectations have not changed as the purple and gold are always hoping to compete for championships. especially in the prime of Doncic’s career.
Bringing in some young, athletic players with speed was the goal to surround Doncic and while it remains to be seen how they played out, additions like Sexton provided reason for optimism.

Doncic took the helm by flying the team out to Slovenia for team bonding and it appears everyone had a great time out there. Sexton enjoyed playing with his new teammates on the court but also detailed off-court aspects that he enjoyed as well.
