The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to four games and remained undefeated in extra innings this season thanks to their walk-off victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, but it came with the cost of an Andy Pages injury.
Pages was hit in the left hand by a 100 mph fastball from Bubba Chandler in the third inning and initially remained in the game after being checked on by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and head athletic trainer Thomas Albert. Pages played center field in the fourth inning but was replaced by Kiké Hernández at the start of the fifth.
Roberts announced after the game that Pages suffered a fractured left hand as a result of getting hit. “So he’ll be out for a while,” Roberts added.
Does Andy Pages need surgery?
In the immediate aftermath of Pages’ injury, the Dodgers anticipate their All-Star center fielder missing upwards of five weeks.
“It’s really unfortunate, obviously. It’s not season-ending, because things like that are four or five weeks. So I would expect him back, knowing him, on the earlier side,” Roberts said.
“But yeah, it’s going to be four weeks but there’s still time in the season for him to be back. I feel for him, because he was having such a good year and he likes to play. We’ve got to move on and hold down the fort until he gets back.”
What Roberts wasn’t yet sure of is whether or not Pages will require surgery to repair the fracture in his non-throwing hand. Clarity on that front should come with further evaluation this weekend.
But fortunately for Pages and the Dodgers, a potential operation would not impact his timeline for a return.
“That’s a possibility,” Roberts said of surgery. “And if it is, I still don’t think it changes the timetable.”
Regardless of what ultimately unfolds, the Dodgers are facing the reality of Pages possibly missing the remainder of the season but returning for the playoffs. The 2026 season ends on Sunday, Sept. 27, which is just over five weeks from when Pages sustained his injury.
As for the near-term, the Dodgers are likely to add an outfielder from the Minor Leagues who can help ensure they remain strong defensively in center field.
