Heading into the 2026-27 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have a lot of new faces and one of them Collin Sexton, who was added in free agency to be a potential spark plug off the bench.
Over eight years in the NBA, Sexton earned a reputation as an efficient scorer while also playing with toughness. Despite being undersized, Sexton has earned the nickname “Young Bull” and he recently explained the origin of that.
“Back home, always like the young one playing up,” Sexton said on the Lakers YouTube channel. “Growing up with my brother and playing maybe three-four grades up, always been like the young bull. ‘Where is he at? Is he going to play?’ So, I feel like that was a nickname that pretty much stuck with me from my childhood all the way up to now.”
Hearing that reasoning checks out as Sexton has earned a reputation as a feisty player and those type of personalities are important to a team. The Lakers have not had an enforcer on their roster and sometimes they are needed to set the tone for a game.
Playing up as a child helped Sexton mature faster and become a more polished basketball player. Last season, he was nearly a part of the elite 50-40-90 club as he put up 15.4 points on 48.5% from the field, 40.1% from 3-point range and 85.5% from the free throw line.
Those percentages are not flukes either, as he averaged 10.9 shot attempts a game and 4.1 of those were from 3-point distance. If he can have a similar year, Sexton certainly becomes an integral piece to the Lakers’ puzzle by consistently proving bench production.

This offseason was centered around how the Lakers could best build a roster around Luka Doncic to contend for a championship. Granted, it is a tall task to do in a single summer, but LeBron James’ departure made it hard to fill the level of production he brought to the table.
Now with plenty of new players in the fold, Sexton needs to learn how to play alongside Doncic and he discussed how his game can benefit the Slovenian star.
“Luka is a tremendous player,” Sexton told reporters during a recent media availability. “He’s one of those people that can think the game 2-3 steps ahead and being on his team you can just feed off of him. At the end of the day just whatever he needs from us, being able to pick it up and give him energy as well.
