As Kevon Looney joins the Los Angeles Lakers, it appears he already has some ties to the organization.
Looney played with Nick Young on the 2018 Warriors, winning their first championship together. That had to have been extra special for them as Looney recently revealed that Young, who also played for the Lakers, is his cousin.
“Having Swaggy P as a cousin has been awesome,” Looney said in an interview with ESPN LA. “We didn’t talk really much about the Lakers, we just really only talk about family stuff. I got to win a championship with him in Golden State. You know when I was a kid, he used to send me a bunch of shoes and clothes. So, I used to be the freshest kid in high school and middle school because of Nick.
“So, shoutout Cuz, he made sure I always was good and being able to share the court with him was always great. He was definitely a Laker legend, I used to go watch his games when he came to play the Bucks in Milwaukee. So, I’m excited to say I get to put on a [Lakers] jersey like Nick.”
When the Lakers were in a rebuild with Kobe Bryant in the twilight years of his career, Young was a player that entertained fans with his offensive highlights. Frankly, there was not much to cheer for during the mid-2010s, but Young was someone who was fun to watch when he got his scoring going to provide fans with some sort of positive.
For Looney, he gets a chance to write his own story for Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Young did not get a chance to play winning basketball during his tenure, but the three-time champion center has an opportunity to play alongside an all-time great in Luka Doncic, as well as Austin Reaves and others.
Although there was plenty of roster turnover this summer, winning a title remains at the forefront for a storied franchise like the Lakers. Hopefully, Looney’s championship experience can be a useful tool for players to lean on throughout a grueling 82-game season.

Playing for the Lakers is a great opportunity. Still, it is not for every player given the spotlight. However, Looney appears ready to embrace this new challenge, admitting Kobe Bryant was his favorite player growing up.
Looney also went to school at UCLA so has multiple ties to the Los Angeles area.
