The Golden State Warriors announced they will host the Los Angeles Lakers in their preseason opener on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Chase Center in San Francisco. This will mark the fourth consecutive year in which the Lakers will take on the Warriors at the Chase Center in the preseason.
Additionally, the Sacramento Kings announced they will host the Lakers for a preseason matchup on Monday, Oct. 5 before traveling to L.A. for another matchup on Thursday, Oct. 8.
While the Kings have been a rival to the Lakers for a while now, the Warriors have also reached that status over the past few seasons. The teams have faced off in some of the most entertaining regular season contests in recent years, along with a meeting in the Western Conference Semifinals in 2023 and the first ever Play-In Tournamen t game in 2021.
Things could be different going forward, however, as a big piece of that rivalry revolved around the matchup between LeBron James and Stephen Curry that stretches back more than a decade. With James no longer with the purple and gold, however, it will be interesting to see if that fire between the two teams remains the same with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves leading the way.
L.A. and Golden State did meet in the Las Vegas Summer League playoffs with the Warriors ending the Lakers’ undefeated run in Vegas. Perhaps players who competed in that contest such as rookie Cameron Carr and second-year forward Adou Thiero could look to exact a little revenge.
The Lakers have a completely different roster now and this contest will be the first look many get at the number of new faces on the team. The likes of Walker Kessler, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes could all be suiting up for the first time in this contest. Often times teams don’t suit up most of their rotation players in the first preseason contest as it happens so soon after the start of training camp, but with so many new pieces, and the need to build chemistry with this group, the Lakers could want to get as many live reps in as possible.
On the other side, the Warriors are returning most of their same roster from last season led by Curry and Draymond Green, but All-Star Jimmy Butler is still recovering from a torn ACL that ended his year last season.
Meanwhile, the Kings are focused on their youth movement led by No. 8 overall pick Darius Acuff. The Lakers did not match up with them in Summer League so will get their first look at Acuff during the regular season.

The Lakers are continuing to add to their wing depth as they have agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with defensive ace Matisse Thybulle. While he has struggled to stay healthy, playing just 45 games over the past two years, he is a two-time All-Defense selection who has improved greatly as a shooter.
