Matthew Stafford is returning as the Los Angeles Rams’ starting quarterback in 2026, but it isn’t yet clear who will be backing him up.
Jimmy Garoppolo has filled that role in each of the last two years, but he became an unrestricted free agent at the start of the offseason. Head coach Sean McVay previously expressed hope that the 34-year-old will return to the team, but L.A. could consider other options.
One possibility is Kirk Cousins, who was released by the Atlanta Falcons earlier this month. A potential signing would make a lot of sense as McVay coached the four-time Pro Bowler during their time with the Washington Redskins from 2012-2016.
They still have a good relationship to this day, and McVay wasn’t shy about wanting to reunite with Cousins during an appearance on ESPN:
“Kirk, come see us man.”

McVay helped Cousins develop into a solid quarterback as he has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in seven seasons since entering the league. The 37-year-old went 12-10 during his time with the Falcons, including a 5-3 record last year when Michael Penix Jr. sustained a season-ending ACL injury.
One of those wins was a surprising upset over the Rams on Monday Night Football in Week 17, which all but ended any hopes of L.A. clinching the NFC West and No. 1 seed.
It will be interesting to see how the Rams address their backup quarterback situation, but they seemingly have two quality options in Garoppolo and Cousins who both know McVay’s system well.
Sean McVay: Rams want to help Puka Nacua ‘continue to grow’ as a person
Puka Nacua is one of best wide receivers in football and key to the Rams’ Super Bowl hopes, but lately has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Nacua’s off-field trouble began late last season, when he made an antisemitic gesture and criticized NFL officials during a livestream. He is now being sued after allegedly biting a woman and making an antisemitic comment while out on New Year’s Eve, although his representatives have denied some of the claims.
During an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Rams head coach Sean McVay commented on Nacua’s issues and said the team is committed to helping him continue to grow as a person.
