The Los Angeles Lakers have a busy summer ahead of them as they are among the teams taking part in the California Classic Summer League from July 3-6 before heading to Nevada for the annual Las Vegas Summer League.
According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the Lakers’ 2026 Summer League squad will be led by lead player development coach Ty Abbott:
At last check, the coaching staff is set to return with Ty Abbott coaching for the Lakers in summer league.
The rest of Abbott’s staff could include assistant coaches like Bob Beyer, Greg St. Jean, Lindsey Harding and Beau Levesque.
Abbott has been at the forefront of the Lakers’ player development efforts since he was hired to the role in August 2024. He previously spent four years with the Chicago Bulls, where he started out as a player development coordinator before being promoted to a player development coach.
Abbott also worked for the Philadelphia 76ers as a player development associate after getting his start with their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
Abbott’s leap to the coaching side of basketball took off after his overseas professional career ended. He had some crossover with Lakers head coach JJ Redick during their time in Philadelphia, which likely led to his hiring.
Who is playing for Lakers in 2026 Summer League?
The Lakers will announce their 2026 Summer League roster in early July, but one player who figures to be included is Adou Thiero. The former second-round draft pick didn’t get an opportunity to play last summer due to his recovery from left knee surgery, but suggested he will be good to go for this year’s tournament.
“Most likely,” Thiero said when asked if he is playing in Summer League this offseason. “I didn’t get to play last year, so I would assume they’ll have me out there this summer.”
Thiero’s rookie season with the Lakers was a mixed bag as he was didn’t make much of an impact early on due to his recovery from left knee surgery, but showed glimpses of being a potential difference-maker down the stretch.
Thiero figures to be the biggest name on the Lakers’ Summer League roster this year, which could also include two-way players Drew Timme and Chris Mañon. Another possible participant is whoever L.A. takes with the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, assuming they keep the selection and don’t trade it for a veteran.
