The new members of the Los Angeles Lakers got their first taste of the fire and passion that head coach JJ Redick brings to the table. The organization brought in a lot of new faces such as Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili and their first practice with the team apparently included a very hyped up Redick.
Kessler spoke about it afterwards, saying that Redick’s speech during the team’s film study session had him ready to fight someone.
“I don’t know, but in film he had us, I was ready to go fight somebody or something I mean he’s such a good motivator,” Kessler said after the first Lakers’ practice. “He’s incredible. He’s really incredible. Having someone that’s done it for 15 years playing and now three years coaching, it’s easy to see why he’s so successful.”
Redick has been very successful in his first two seasons as an NBA head coach, winning 50 games in back-to-back years with the Lakers and capturing the Pacific Division title in both seasons as well. In terms of exactly what it was that was so motivating, Kessler gave just a brief insight into Redick’s words.
“I can’t tell you everything he was saying, but he was motivating us,” Kessler added. “It’s gonna be a fun year. He was kinda just talking about the hero’s journey and stuff like that. The adversity, the transformation that happens and then the end goal. It was pretty hype, I’m not gonna lie. It was cool.”
This season will be a journey and Kessler will be a big part of it. The Lakers acquired the big man via trade with the Utah Jazz, signing him to a new four-year contract to be the team’s defensive anchor and pick-and-roll partner for Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. How he performs will be crucial to the success of the Lakers this year and going forward.
But it will be on Redick to put Kessler in the right positions to be successful and to get he and the rest of the Lakers to buy-in to his vision. And after one practice it sounds as if he’s already got Kessler right where he needs to be mentally.
