Sean McVay: Stetson Bennett Has Had ‘A Good Look In His Eyes’ During Rams OTAs

The Los Angeles Rams went into the offseason with a clear need at backup quarterback.

Although Matthew Stafford bounced back and only missed game during the 2023 season, Los Angeles knew they needed to improve the quarterback room. Despite a strong showing from Carson Wentz, the Rams decided to sign another veteran option in Jimmy Garoppolo after he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Garoppolo was coveted because of his familiarity playing in a system like head coach Sean McVay’s and will step in as the team’s new No. 2 option. However, it looks like Los Angeles will have another depth piece as Stetson Bennett was confirmed to be with the team during OTAs.

McVay didn’t dismiss the idea of the Rams addressing quarterback in the draft, but is liking what he’s seen from Bennett so for.

“I think you leave all options on the table,” McVay said. “Stetson’s been here. We’re in phase one. It’s been just meetings and then lifting so our ability to get out on the field with the players hasn’t existed yet. That’s the thing that’s the most fun.

“But he’s done a great job being engaged in the meetings. We’ve had a lot of individual meetings up to this point. I know (Quarterbacks Coach) Dave Ragone has really enjoyed his interaction with him throughout the first six days, if you will, with Monday through Thursday last week, and then now being through two days this week and so it’s been good. “I mean, he looks good. He’s had a good look in his eyes. He’s been attentive in the meetings and then I’m looking forward to next week to being able to get out on the grass with all of our players and Stetson being one of them.”

Bennett missed the entirety of his rookie year after the Rams placed him on the NFL’s non-football injury list. It was a puzzling story as no details were given about Bennett going on the list, but it appears he’s gotten past whatever was going on.

The Rams could choose to keep three quarterbacks on the roster, and it sounds like Bennett’s in serious contention win a roster spot.

Former Rams quarterback Carson Wentz signs with Chiefs

As for Wentz, his late season cameo with the Rams, winning their Week 18 game against the San Francisco 49ers, appears to have earned him another job for the 2024 season.

While Wentz could not find a starting gig, he has one of the best backup jobs around as he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs to play under and learn from Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
