Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has become known for his interesting comparisons and choice of words during press conferences when discussing his team and players. Perhaps most famous was when he compared signing guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to ‘mana from heaven.’
Now, with a new season on the horizon and a ton of new players on the roster, Pelinka dipped back in his bag to bring out a new comparison for this upcoming Lakers season.
“I was talking to JJ the other day, and our players will find this out on Tuesday, but we’ve talked about every season is a little bit like ‘The Odyssey,’ if anyone has seen the movie,” Pelinka said during he and head coach JJ Redick’s press conference on Thursday. “Oh, it was actually a poem. Fair enough. You launch a season, and there’s things that happen throughout that you can’t predict, but you have to stay together as a group and stay strong. That’s a great theme for us. We’re super excited about the people upstairs, the coaching staff, the support staff, the roster. Nothing’s changed day-to-day.”
Of course “The Odyssey” was originally a poem, but is fitting for this time as an adaptation was released as a movie this summer and was one of the biggest blockbuster films of 2026 so it makes sense that it would be on Pelinka’s mind. And the comparison is one that makes sense.
Every basketball season, no matter what a team does in the offseason to prepare, there are just things that will happen that you can not predict. Whether it be injuries, players going through personal issues, unexpected organizational changes, things not clicking the way it was expected, players being better than expected or any other number of things, it is just impossible to know how things will play out every year.
But the most important thing for the Lakers is that throughout everything, the team and organization as a whole stays united and comes together to push through it all. And if this team can do that, they will ultimately be successful for this upcoming year.

The Lakers have won at least 50 games in Redick’s first two years as a head coach and there are questions about how successful this team will be in his third. But Redick is excited as he feels this is the first time that the roster he has truly fits together.
