The Los Angeles Rams announced that they have signed undrafted rookie free agent guard Abdul Beecham.
Beecham spent three years at Kansas State University before declaring for the 2019 NFL Draft. The 6’3”, 321 lbs. guard helped Kansas State become the Big 12’s No. 3 rushing team. The Panthers finished the season averaging 182.6 yards per game in part thanks to Beecham.
The Rams currently have Beecham listed as the fourth option for right guard. They are currently relying on fourth-year player Austin Blythe to start at right guard, but also have Jeremiah Kolone entering his sophomore year.
Additionally, the Rams also signed another rookie guard in Chandler Brewer. Brewer played at Middle Tennessee State, where the team finished seventh in the CUSA in points per game.
Last year, the Rams had the third-best running offense in the NFL. While that is spectacular, with a player like Todd Gurley, you hope to have the absolute best running game in the league.
Quarterback Jared Goff was also sacked 33 times last year, 14th highest in the league. For reference, Patrick Mahomes was only sacked 26 times and Tom Brady only 21 times, good for 22nd and 28th highest, respectively.
The details of Beecham’s contract have yet to be revealed, but it is likely a very basic rookie contract. It is surprising that the Rams have signed one more player with cuts coming up so soon. Do not be surprised if Beecham is not on the Rams regular roster by the time 53-man rosters are announced, or he could potentially stick around on the practice squad if he gets cut.
Los Angeles’ final preseason game is Thursday night against the Houston Texans, so it will interesting to see if Beecham gets any action.
