The Las Vegas Raiders trading away tight end Darren Waller to the New York Giants was one of the most surprising moves of the free agency period so far. Waller remains one of the most talented tight ends in the league and the Raiders moved him for a third-round pick, 100th overall.

Not only does the move take Waller away from the place where he grew into a Pro Bowler, but it also takes him away from his new wife. Waller recently got married to Kelsey Plum, a guard on the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA, and news of that marriage was actually leaked by Raiders coach Josh McDaniels at the NFL Scouting Combine. This didn’t sit well with Waller as the couple had not publicly announced their plans.

Following the trade, ESPN NFL analyst Robert Griffin III made a joking tweet about McDaniels trading Waller just 10 days after being married. This prompted Plum to respond with a bit of a shot at the Raiders coach:

Prolly cause he wasn’t invited to the wedding lol https://t.co/K3i7oW5oe4

It was a hilarious response and would likely be the first trade made in NFL history due to the lack of a wedding invite. But Plum would later clarify that it was all meant as a joke:

It was a joke people LOL. I love Las Vegas, here to defend the title. I will put down my phone now pic.twitter.com/Ymb9q8t47m

It is still an unfortunate situation for both Waller and Plum as the newlyweds surely had some plans on how things would work for them in Las Vegas, but now must switch gears completely with Waller now in New York. There is surely some frustration, but trades are a part of the industry in which they are both part of.

Nonetheless, Waller must now turn his focus to the Giants as he looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2022 season. As part of an offense led by quarterback Daniel Jones, Waller could be in line for a huge season under Brian Daboll.

The Raiders meanwhile continue to make changes across the roster. With Jimmy Garoppolo the choice to be the team’s quarterback while also adding former Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the existing core of DaVante Adams and running back Josh Jacobs, the makings of an explosive offense is still there for this team.
