Morgan Rielly expecting to be in a Maple Leafs jersey come opening night

David Morassutti of Sportsnet: Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been in the rumor mill for a while now, with reports that earlier this offseason he submitted a list of four Western Conference teams that he’d okay a trade to. Obviously, a trade hasn’t happened, and Rielly expects to start the season in Toronto.

“That’s what I would expect. For me, it’s just trying to stay focused and be present. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Rielly’s happy to still be a part of the Leafs organization. He’s 49 games away from 1,000, and he’d be the sixth player in franchise history to play a 1,000 games in a Leafs jersey.

After John Chayka was hired as GM, the two talked. Chayka didn’t guarantee what would happen, but Rielly liked the directional plan of the organization.

“We had a good conversation after worlds, and he’s got a plan,” Rielly explained. “He’s very direct, and as a player, that’s what you want.”

Quick hits on the Ducks, Stars and Avs

Emily Sadler of Sportsnet: The Anaheim Ducks have $13 million in expiring contracts with Chris Kreider and Alex Killorn, but they’ve only got $9 million in cap space now, with Cutter Gauthier needing a new deal. Next offseason Beckett Sennecke is eligible for an extension.

The Dallas Stars are over the salary cap ceiling and will need to manage that. Tyler Seguin‘s $9.85 million will come off the books. Jason Robertson is on a one-year deal, and how their season goes could determine which direction they go with him.

Offseason Questions, Unfinished Stories and Speculation

The Colorado Avalanche will have around $10 million coming off the books next season with Brent Burns, Nicolas Roy, Artturi Lehkonen and Scott Wedgewood, which will basically get eaten up by Cale Makar‘s extension, whenever they agree to one.
