We are still a few months away from the Los Angeles Rams being back in action, but we now know where and when we’ll see them next playing meaningful football. The Rams are San Francisco 49ers are slated to meet Week 1 in an NFC West battle in Melbourne, Australia.
The Rams and 49ers facing off in Australia was already announced. But it has now been confirmed that the Week 1 divisional bout will take place as a Thursday Night Football matchup and will be aired by Netflix in partnership with NBC, according to Dan Shanoff and Andrew Marchand of The Athletic:
Netflix will air the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game from Australia during this year’s opening week, sources briefed on the move tell The Athletic.
The streaming platform will air the Week 1 game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, Sept. 10, with kickoff at 8:35 p.m. ET from Melbourne Cricket Ground, the largest stadium in Australia. NBC is expected to handle production of the game.
An 8:35 p.m. ET kickoff means 5:35 p.m. PT and an unprecedented 10:35 a.m. kickoff Friday morning in Melbourne. When the game was announced, many fans wondered how timing of the game would work with Melbourne having a 14-hour time difference with the East Coast and a 17-hour time difference with both team’s local time zone.
The solution was Thursday Night Football in America and Friday morning football in Australia. This is not the first time Netflix has taken over a football game, as they had a Christmas Day game last season and figure to become a more regular part of the NFL’s streaming rotation.
This means that we are almost exactly four months away from the first regular season game for the Rams and the NFL.
