The Miami Marlins defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium, powered by a dominant performance from right-hander Edward Cabrera, who struck out 10 batters across 5 2/3 innings. The victory gave the Marlins their fifth series win of the season and marked their first on the road, improving their away record to 8-15.

Pitching Dominance and Defensive Execution

Cabrera, making his eighth start of the season, delivered his strongest outing yet. He allowed only three hits and two walks while recording season-high strikeouts, effectively limiting the Angels’ offense throughout his tenure on the mound. Relievers Tanner Scott and Anthony Bender preserved the shutout in the middle innings before Ronny Henriquez closed the game in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Los Angeles hitters were held in check, managing only three hits while striking out 15 times combined against Cabrera and the Marlins’ bullpen. The Angels’ best scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning when they put two runners on base, but Bender struck out Taylor Ward with a fastball to escape the threat.

Offensive Support in key Innings

The Marlins scored their runs in three consecutive innings, beginning in the third when Javier Sanoja hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the game’s first run. Miami extended its lead in the fourth as Otto Lopez led off with a single, stole second, and came around to score on a two-out single to center by Connor Norby.

In the fifth, Sanoja and Jesus Sanchez produced back-to-back doubles to push the lead to 3-0, which proved to be more than enough support for Cabrera and the relief corps.

Angels’ Struggles Continue

Angels starter Kyle Hendricks (2-6) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Despite a solid effort, Hendricks received little support from an offense that entered the game averaging 7.6 runs per contest during a recent eight-game win streak but has since cooled significantly.

Travis d’Arnaud accounted for the Angels’ only extra-base hit, doubling in the second inning, but the team could not capitalize. Ward’s near-home run in the sixth inning, which curled just foul, was the closest Los Angeles came to breaking onto the scoreboard.

Looking Ahead

The Angels will begin a new series at home on Monday against the New York Yankees, with right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (3-5, 5.03 ERA) set to start. The Marlins will travel to San Diego for a series against the Padres. Left-hander Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.80 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for Miami against his former team.

Betting Odds Context

While betting odds for the game were not available at publication, recent trends had pegged the Angels as narrow home favorites due to their improved record and Hendricks’ veteran presence on the mound. However, the Marlins’ pitching depth and Cabrera’s breakout outing proved decisive.
