Leadership is an integral part of building a championship culture and for the Los Angeles Lakers, they have a lengthy history of leaders. LeBron James came to L.A. in 2018 with the hopes of turning the franchise around and he did so in 2020.
James propelled the Lakers to their 17th title with Anthony Davis as his co-star, thanks in part to his veteran leadership. Now 23 seasons into his career, James detailed how he balances holding himself accountable while leading his team to as many wins as possible.
“That just comes with territory of being a leader. When you’re the leader and guys look for your leadership and guys run through a well for you, the least thing you could do is be accountable, hold yourself accountable,” James said onhis Mind the Game podcast. “And take accountability when you mess up or you not feeling like you’ve done your job and even more like even when you think you could have done more. And maybe you could have, but you still feel that responsibility.
“So, I think it’s just a responsibility of just being a leader. You have to learn your teammates over the course of time and I think that’s what the regular season is all about unless you’ve spent multiple years with teammate or whatever. But, you have to know how to talk and approach each and every teammate differently depending on the outcome you want to get out of it. So, there’s teammates that you can be in their face and what the f–k are you doing moments right in their face in the moment. There’s teammates you got to pull them to the side and pull them away from the coaches and the players. There’s teammates that you could go all hell storm for and then react to that.
“So, you have to understand and take time to learn your teammates and how to get the best out of them depending on how you say it because at the end of the day it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. But, you have to have that responsibility too.”
Despite being in the twilight years of his career, James has remained invested in on-court communication and getting the best out of his teammates. While Luka Doncic continues to grow in that department, it would not hurt to have James back next season to continue to guide the Lakers to another title.
LeBron James impressed with what Cooper Flagg showed as rookie
Leading up to his rookie season, Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg was one of, if not the most, touted prospects since James. Now, after winning Rookie of the Year, James was impressed with what Flagg showed in his first season in the NBA.
