The Los Angeles Lakers have made a number of hirings throughout the front office this offseason as new owner Mark Walter has taken over and is looking to improve the franchise on all levels. One of the biggest hirings is Rohan Ramadas as assistant general manager of strategy and data systems.
Ramadas’ role is primarily focused on the analytical and strategy side of things and he came in very highly regarded. And the early returns on what he brings to the table are good as he has reportedly been impressive in the team’s draft meetings, via Dan Woike of The Athletic:
I’m not going to pretend to know exactly what’s happening in the Lakers’ draft meetings, but early word on Ramadas is that he’s been impressive.
This is great to hear as the Lakers continue to expand their front office with new faces and strategies. Ramadas spent nine seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans, but also served as a draft analyst for the Miami Heat in 2017 so being involved in this is nothing new to him. Ramadas isn’t the scouting expert, but his knowledge of analytics should help the Lakers greatly as they scour the draft for the right prospects to add.
Most believe the team will be eyeing a center with the 25th overall pick, but there are many directions the team could go, with a high-motor reportedly being an important characteristic for whoever they select. And while they don’t currently own a second-round pick, the Lakers could always acquire one if someone they covet drops, not to mention L.A. has done well in finding undrafted players who can contribute as well.
This offseason is an extremely important one for the Lakers as they have pointed to this summer as one in which they will make great improvements to the roster around Luka Doncic. The team has a ton of salary cap space and many avenues with which they can take this roster into championship level contention. That will take the entire front office executing to the best of their ability and it sounds as if Ramadas is already making a great impact within the organization.
Lakers still searching for second assistant GM
While Ramadas has been impressive, the Lakers planned to hire two assistant general managers this summer. However, the team still has yet to land on the person who will be in charge of scouting and player development, which is a surprise to many around the league.
