After sustaining a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and cutting his 2025-26 season short, Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic will be 100% heading into this upcoming season. Not having their No. 1 option in the playoffs hurt, but the Lakers were able to upset the Houston Rockets in the first round of the postseason.
A majority of Doncic’s summers are spent back in Slovenia, where he trains and spends time with family. After hosting a Lakers minicamp there, he continues to ramp up ahead of the start of training camp and is headed back to L.A. on Sept. 20, via Kosakara of Sportklub (translated to English):
“But the real test of the solidity of the laid foundations will be the coming weeks and months. Doncic, who has now increasingly turned over the direction of his life to his agent Lara Beth , is expected to remain in Europe until September 20. He will then move to Los Angeles. The LA Lakers will officially start preparations for the 2026/27 season on September 29, with a traditional media day organized the day before.”
With that being said, it appears Doncic made the most of his time in his native country and has been training hard:
This week, Luka entered the final phase of his central individual preparations in Ljubljana. After a short break by the sea, he started working again, partly in the fitness center, partly in the basketball hall. His work process does not yet include classic basketball training with full load or body play. Therefore, in contrast to previous years, he did not join Ilirija’s training in Tivoli, but mostly trains with his assistants in a smaller hall within the new swimming pool complex.
Expectations are sky high for the 27-year-old as he becomes the sole No. 1 option for the Lakers this year. General manager Rob Pelinka is tasked with trying to maximize this new era led by Doncic and opinions have been mixed regarding the acquisitions he made.
Frankly, the roster remains incomplete as they do not have a starting-caliber power forward currently. Hopefully, Pelinka and company remain active in filling that void while evaluating how this team comes together with nine new players.
Luka Doncic picks Michael Jordan as NBA legend he would want to play against
Doncic’s competitive spirit makes him special as he has etched himself as one of the top players in the league today. When reflecting on previous eras as to who he would want to play against, Doncic went with a no-brainer decision and picked Michael Jordan.
