Despite having one of the best seasons of his career so far, last year did not end the way Luka Doncic would have wanted as a Grade 2 left hamstring strain kept him out for the end of the regular season as well as the Los Angeles Lakers’ entire postseason run.

This offseason the Lakers’ front office remade the roster to fit around Doncic as he is clearly cemented as the face of this franchise and leader of the team. But the most important question is his health and Doncic gave a promising update.

“I don’t know exactly when I came back on the court,” Doncic said at Lakers Media Day. “I know I had a lot of time, just taking it slowly, don’t take no risks. But right now I’m feeling great. Feel rested. Mentally I feel great so I can’t wait just to start […] No, no [restrictions].”

The fact that Doncic has no restrictions coming into training camp is a promising sign. This means that not only is Doncic fully healed form that hamstring issue, but also that he has been able to put in all of the necessary work this summer to come into this season and hit the ground running.

Doncic’s health has been a bit of a talking point over the past couple of seasons, especially after questions about his overall fitness and work ethic came out following his trade to the Lakers. But he has gotten himself into tremendous shape over the past year and will have no issues as Lakers’ training camp kicks off.

This is a new era of Lakers basketball with Doncic at the forefront and the expectations of this franchise remain the same. The organization has always been about winning championships and that isn’t going to change now. Doncic shares that same goal as he has accomplished so much in his career already, but has yet to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy to end the season.

Whether he can lead this Lakers team to that level is something that many aren’t sure he can do with this current roster, but by all accounts he will be ready to prove people wrong on night one of this season.

Luka Doncic comfortable taking over leadership role for Lakers

With LeBron James gone as well as veteran guard Marcus Smart, the Lakers lost a lot in terms of the vocal leaders of this team from a year ago. But Doncic insists he is ready to step up in that capacity as well.
