Training camp has officially gotten underway as the Los Angeles Lakers held their first practice on Tuesday. Head coach JJ Redick is entering his third season at the helm and will look to continue to build off his first two years as he led the Lakers to back-to-back 50-win seasons and Pacific Division titles.
This year is different, however, as the Lakers have re-made the roster and there are a number of new faces. But Redick is ready for the challenge ahead and came into training camp looking to accomplish three goals.
“We had a really productive August and September with our small group works,” Redick said after the Lakers’ first practice. “So in terms of installs and teaching for at least this portion of the preseason, it doesn’t really change anything. I have three goals for camp and it’s continue to establish our defensive principles. Continue to establish our early offense, which has been our main priority for all of September. And then lastly, just get in great shape. We’ve gotten terrific buy-in for the last several weeks and today was very additive to those three things.”
Getting in the best shape possible has been something Redick has preached to this team since the previous offseason and the team bought into that last year and the same looks to be the case this year. With Redick wanting the Lakers to be improved defensively and get out in transition, having excellent cardio and stamina is a necessity.
One thing that has been apparent with Redick is that he is very detail-oriented and straight forward with his expectations for his team both individually and as a group. Even though this is a new group that needs to build chemistry, it looks as if the Lakers have been able to hit the ground running as training camp has begun.
Redick has a tough job ahead of him in trying to push the Lakers into that elite group in the Western Conference, but that journey has now begun and he has laid out what he expects of this Lakers team to reach that goal.
