Media Day for the Los Angeles Lakers is set to take place on Monday, Sept. 28, which signals the start of the season with training camp kicking off the next day. But before that goes down, Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick will be holding his own press conference on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. PT.
Pelinka has not spoken publicly since his annual end-of-the-season press conference despite an extremely busy summer reshaping the Lakers’ roster, so there surely will be a lot of questions for him. The team parted ways with LeBron James after eight seasons with the franchise, while also letting go of key rotation pieces such as Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Jaxson Hayes and Luke Kennard.
In their place, the Lakers made a huge trade for big man Walker Kessler whom the organization believes is the ideal fit alongside superstar guard Luka Doncic. They also re-signed Austin Reaves to a new four-year, $185 million deal ensuring the NBA’s highest-scoring duo stays together for the foreseeable future.
Pelinka and the front office also brought in a number of new players in free agency, including guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton, forward Sandro Mamukelashvili, defensive wings Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams, veteran big man Kevon Looney and explosive scoring guard Jaden Hardy. How all of these pieces will come together under Redick is unknown, but the pieces are there for this team to take a step forward in the Western Conference and the head coach will likely give his thoughts on Thursday.
Last season, the Lakers won the Pacific Division for the second consecutive year and improved their win total from 50 to 53. They also won a playoff series, dispatching the Houston Rockets in the first round before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second. Most expect the Thunder and San Antonio Spurs to remain the top two teams in the conference, but the Lakers are one of many squads looking to break into that elite group.
This offseason also saw a lot of change on the organizational side for the Lakers with a change in ownership still ongoing amidst the building out of the front office staff as a whole, including two new assistant GMs in Rohan Ramadas and Eric Amsler who will work under Pelinka. How everything will run from the top down is still a lingering question for this franchise as well as where Pelinka stands with the new owners.
