The Los Angeles Dodgers have maintained the best record in baseball despite being without several key contributors, and now they are potentially just days away from adding reinforcements.
That is especially true with Edwin Díaz and possibly Kiké Hernández as well. Further down the line but making progress are the likes of Tyler Glasnow, Will Smith, Blake Snell and Blake Treinen.
Dodgers updates
Tyler Glasnow
Marred by an unexpectedly long recovery from back spasms that’s included multiple setbacks, Glasnow appears to have turned a corner. He had been throwing bullpen sessions and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on SportsNet LA he believed Glasnow was facing batters Friday.
If not Friday, the right-hander was scheduled to pitch live batting practice in the coming days.
Edwin Díaz
Roberts initially suggested Díaz would possibly return for this weekend’s series against the New York Mets, but the team ultimately decided to extend his rehab assignment rather than have the veteran fly across the country.
Díaz checked off the box of pitching on back-to-back days and is scheduled for a final rehab game on Sunday.
“He came out of the back-to-back well,” Roberts said. “We talked about him flying across the country doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, so I think he’s supposed to pitch on Sunday. If that goes well, he should be back with us when we get back on Tuesday.”
Kiké Hernández
Hernández pointed to the start of the Dodgers’ homestand as his target for return, but Tuesday might end up being slightly optimistic.
“Kiké is trending. Hopefully Kiké will be back with us soon,” Roberts said. “I just don’t know what day they’re thinking.”
Hernández played in his fifth rehab game on Friday night.
Blake Snell
Snell also was with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday for a second start of his rehab assignment. Snell threw 49 pitches and allowed one run over 2.2 innings as he continues the process of building up.
“He’s working hard, he’s anxious to get back, but there’s some markers he needs to check,” Roberts explained. “So it would be very helpful for him to get through three innings.”
Will Smith
Like with Glasnow, Smith’s stint on the injured list has lasted much longer than first anticipated. He too has encountered setbacks and was recently shut down from baseball activities.
“He’s pain-free, he’s starting to get back into being more active,” Roberts revealed. “What that means, don’t really know yet. But he’s pain-free.”
Blake Treinen
Treinen is another of the Dodgers’ pitchers currently unavailable, and his recovery process is slowly moving along.
“Blake is doing well,” Roberts shared. “He’s pain-free, continuing to progress. Not sure where he’s at in his progression, but everything I hear, he’s doing really well.”
Treinen has been out since June 20 because of right elbow inflammation.
