The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Danny Duffy to the 60-day injured list in order to clear a spot on their 40-man roster in order to sign Freddie Freeman to a six-year, $162 million contract on Friday.

Earlier in the day the Dodgers announced the re-signing of Duffy to a one-year contract with a team option for the 2023 season. The left-hander returns to the team despite not throwing a pitch after being acquired from the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline during the 2021 season.

Duffy was on the 10-day IL at the time of being traded to L.A. as he was recovering from a left flexor strain that had kept him out for multiple weeks. The Dodgers and Duffy were optimistic he would make a full recovery, but a setback prompted him to be shut down for the remainder of the year.

Duffy joins Clayton Kershaw, Jimmy Nelson and Shane Greene as pitchers who have re-signed with the Dodgers since the MLB lockout ended. Of the group, Nelson is the least likely to pitch this year.

The right-hander underwent underwent Tommy John surgery and a flexor tendon repair last August. He was placed on the 60-day IL in order to clear a spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster for the signing of Duffy.

Duffy is hopeful to return from his flexor tendon surgery around the middle of the 2022 season.

Also on Friday, the Dodgers announced the signing of veteran southpaw Tyler Anderson to a one-year contract. Per multiple reports, his deal for the 2022 season is worth $8 million.

Anderson split the 2021 campaign between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners, making a combined 31 starts and throwing 167 innings while posting a 4.53 ERA, 4.37 FIP, 7.22 strikeouts per nine, 2.05 walks per nine and 2.1 WAR.

Anderson will compete with Andrew Heaney, Tony Gonsolin and David Price for one of the final two spots in the Dodgers’ Opening Day starting rotation.
