Shohei Ohtani belted his 44th home run of the season, and Alex Call recorded a career night with four hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers rolled past the Colorado Rockies 11-4 on Tuesday at Coors Field.
The Dodgers struck quickly against Rockies starter Austin Gomber, scoring twice in the opening frame before Call and Ohtani each launched solo home runs in the second inning. The early power display helped Los Angeles build a commanding 7-0 lead by the third inning. Ohtani’s drive kept him tied with Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber for the National League home run lead after Schwarber also homered earlier in the night.
Los Angeles finished with 18 hits, continuing its dominance over Colorado with its 11th win in the last 12 head-to-head matchups. Call was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle and added his third home run of the season. Will Smith contributed three hits, raising his batting average to .308, the best in the National League. Every Dodgers starter collected at least one hit in the victory, with seven of their 11 runs coming on two-out hits.
Gomber’s struggles continued for Colorado. The left-hander, who dropped to 0-7, gave up seven runs on eight hits in three innings. He has not recorded a victory in his last 15 starts, with his most recent win dating back to Sept. 5, 2024. The Rockies, who had entered the contest on a four-game winning streak, could not overcome the early deficit despite showing flashes of offense later in the game.
Rookie Kyle Karros provided a bright spot for Colorado, hitting his first major league home run with a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Brenton Doyle also connected for a two-run homer in the fourth. The Rockies’ other highlight came when Warming Bernabel reached on an infield single. However, he was narrowly thrown out trying to advance on a miscue by Dodgers third baseman Buddy Kennedy.
For Los Angeles, right-hander Emmet Sheehan (4-2) matched a career high by working six innings. He struck out seven while allowing four runs on seven hits, including the two home runs. The performance improved his record to 3-0 in three starts against the Rockies this season.
The Dodgers, the defending World Series champions, continue to maintain their lead in the National League West as they prepare for the series’ final game. Ohtani (0-0, 3.47 ERA) will make his 10th pitching start of the year for Los Angeles on Wednesday night, his first appearance on the mound since being struck by a line drive in his last outing. Colorado will counter with right-hander Tanner Gordon (3-5, 7.98 ERA), who will look to bounce back after a string of inconsistent starts.
Oddsmakers have opened the Dodgers as -220 favorites on the moneyline, with the Rockies listed at +180. The over/under for total runs is set at 11.5, reflecting the offensive potential at Coors Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. local time.
