Max Muncy delivered a pair of home runs, including a game-tying shot in the ninth inning, and Freddie Freeman followed with a walk-off RBI double in the 10th to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-5 extra-inning victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. The win snapped the Mets’ four-game winning streak and evened the four-game series at one apiece.
The Dodgers entered the contest favored slightly by oddsmakers, with the betting line listing them at -125 and the Mets at +105. The over/under for the game was set at nine runs, a figure that was surpassed in the final inning as the two division leaders engaged in another tightly contested matchup.
Freeman’s game-winning hit, a deep fly ball to left field, appeared to confuse Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who got turned around while tracking it. The ball dropped near the warning track, allowing automatic runner Tommy Edman to score from second base with one out in the 10th inning. The decisive hit capped another comeback win for the Dodgers, who trailed 5-4 after seven innings and had managed only two hits since the first inning before Muncy’s dramatic home run tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Tuesday’s victory marked Los Angeles’s 20th come-from-behind win of the season. The game also mirrored Monday night’s opener, when the Dodgers rallied to tie the contest in the ninth before falling 4-3 in 10 innings. This time, reliever Tanner Scott rebounded by retiring the Mets in order in the top of the 10th, including strikeouts of Juan Soto and Pete Alonso. Nimmo followed with a groundout to end the inning.
José Buttó issued an intentional walk to Shohei Ohtani in the bottom half before Mookie Betts lined out. Freeman then stepped in and delivered the deciding swing. Betts, returning from a toe fracture that had sidelined him for four games, went 2-for-5 in his return.
The Dodgers jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first inning, with Muncy’s first home run of the night, a two-run shot, highlighting the offensive burst against Mets starter Tylor Megill. However, the Mets responded quickly. Soto, who was loudly booed throughout the night by the crowd of 53,424, hit a two-run homer in the third inning to narrow the deficit to one run.
New York tied the game in the fifth on a Pete Alonso RBI double. Alonso drove in Francisco Lindor, who had reached base on a walk and advanced on a fielding error by Muncy. The Mets then took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Nimmo beat out an infield single to first base. The initial out call was overturned on review, giving the Mets the go-ahead run and ending Clayton Kershaw’s night.
The Dodgers’ bullpen held the Mets scoreless over the final four innings, setting up Muncy’s second homer of the night and Freeman’s walk-off double. The two teams have now played five times in the regular season, with three games going to extra innings. The Dodgers improved to 2-3 in those meetings, after having eliminated the Mets in Game 6 of the 2024 National League Championship Series.
The series continues Wednesday night, with right-hander Griffin Canning (5-2, 3.23 ERA) scheduled to start for New York. Los Angeles will counter with Tony Gonsolin (3-1, 5.23 ERA) as the Dodgers look to take a lead in the season series.
